今回の作品は、近状の御婆さんが自分の庭で作っているレタスをくれましたので、そのお礼としてあげたものですが、高級マーカーであるコピックマーカーを試してみたいという気持ちで描いた作品でもあります。あげる前にスキャンしましたので、ディジタルデータとしてはまだ残っています。

This piece was a way of saying thank you to a elderly neighborhood lady who gave us some lettuce from her own garden, but it was also a piece created from the desire to test out high quality Copic markers. I scanned it into my computer before giving it away, so I still have it in digital data form.

フォトショップなどの画像編集ソフトで色に立体感を与えるのがあまり好きではないので、パソコンで色を塗った作品の中に平面的な色になるものが多いのですが、手描きの時は立体感を付けるのが大好きです。

I don’t really like modeling color in image editing software like Photoshop, so most of the drawings that I color on the computer generally tend to have flat coloring only, but I love modeling color when drawing by hand.

特にコピックマーカーで色を塗るというのは「作業」というより、「遊び」の方に近いかもしれません。マーカー自体は高くて、インクが無くなったときに買うために画材屋に行くのも多少面倒ですので、今はあまり頼っていませんが、この作品を見る度に筆の感覚にも近いコピックマーカーで描くのはどれほど楽しいか、思い出します。

Particularly when using Copic markers, the modeling process tends to feel more like “playing” than “working.” The markers themselves are expensive, and it is kind of a pain to go all the way to the art supply store to purchase them when they run out of ink, so I don’t rely on them much these days. But whenever I look at this work, I remember how much fun it was to draw with those almost brush-like Copic markers.

コピックマーカーの色が鮮やかで、とてもきれいです。レタスの影の部分の緑が深い色になっていて、植物の独特な癒し感が贅沢に現れてきていると思います。明るい赤とのコントラストも好きです。これは自分の技法を自分でほめるつもりではなく、あくまでこのすばらしいマーカーの高質感を賛美したいだけです！

The Copic marker pigment is vivid and very beautiful. The green of the shadows on the lettuce is a nice deep color, and I feel that the healing feeling unique to greenery is lavishly present here. I also love the contrast with the bright red. I don’t mean to brag about my own technique here at all, I am merely singing praises to the high quality feel of these awesome markers!
