Los Angeles - It was one of those games for the ages that will certainly grow in proportion with the passage of time. One game, winner takes all for the second World Baseball Classic. A game at Dodger Stadium on Monday night that had more twists and turns than kabuki. The Japanese essentially had to win it twice. ""That was as much intensity as you've seen in a baseball game in a long time,"" Commissioner Bud Selig said after the four-hour spectacular ended with Japan besting rival Korea, 5-3, in 10 innings. ""It was incredible. It was really amazing."" And so the Japanese are the champions once again, successfully defending their 2006 title. This time they can thank old faithful Ichiro Suzuki for the victory. The 35-year-old Mariners right fielder snapped a 3-3 tie with a two-run single on an eight-pitch at-bat against right-handed reliever Chang Yong Lim with runners on second and third and two outs in the 10th.
The city of Ijebu-Ode turned out to be a graveyard for two of the sides expected to push for honours at the FIFA U-17 World Cup Nigeria 2009. The scene of Argentina's shock exit to the heroic Colombians in the Round of 16, the southern metropolis also provided the setting for Italy's farewell from the tournament on Sunday. The Azzurrini produced a typically battling display against a powerful Switzerland side, but failed to make the most of their opportunities on a day when good fortune deserted them. Yet, as he tells FIFA.com, Italy coach Pasquale Salerno has been pleased with his side's efforts over the last two weeks. ""It might sound strange, but I'm happy with everything the team has done,"" says Salerno in the wake of a fine but luckless performance against Swiss. ""Our objective here is to prepare the players for the future, and if you look at the games we've played in this campaign, I think you can definitely say we're on the right track.""

The All Black legend, who played 63 tests for New Zealand, is close to beginning his rugby career again, after being named in Marseille Vitrolles line up for the opening matches of the Federale One league. The Federale One is the highest level of semi professional rugby in France. The league, which features 48 teams, is officially the third highest division in French domestic rugby. The two top teams of the championship are promoted to the Pro D2, the second level of French rugby. The Marseille based club has heralded the arrival of Jonah Lomu, who underwent kidney transplant surgery five years ago. Arguably no other man in rugby history has been through the ordeals that ex-All Black has been through, but despite all of this, rugby remains his great passion, and the 34 year old continues to amaze, as he makes yet another comeback to the game.
Tiger Woods opened with two birdies and wound up with 68 on Friday to build a three-shot lead going into the weekend of the JBWere Australian Masters. It was the fourth straight tournament in which Woods has had the 36-hole lead, although his only victory during that stretch came at the BMW Championship outside Chicago in September. He lost the last two times, including last week in Shanghai at the HSBC Champions. Woods was at 10-under, three shots clear of an American, Jason Dufner, and a pair of Australians in Greg Chalmers and James Nitties. Before enthusiastic crowd that topped 24,000 people who endured hot sunshine and dust, Woods quickly regained the lead from Dufner, who shot his 67 in the morning to finish at 7-under.
