以前描いた漫画から切り取った３コマです。その漫画は「オンデマンド出版」という自費出版方法で出版してみました。呪われたお寺という話で、そのお寺を取り付いていた僧侶の幽霊が最後に出てくる場面を描く３コマでした。

These are three panels that I took from a comic I made in the past. I self-published that comic using an “on demand publishing” method. The story was about a haunted temple, and these three panels are the scene where the ghost of a priest haunting the temple finally appears at the end.

最近アメリカなどで人気が集まっている出版方法である「オンデマンド出版」というサービスは、出版会社で出版したいデータ（ pdf ファイルなど）を保存してもらって、その出版会社を通してお客様からの注文が入り次第その注文が必要とする部数だけを印刷してもらって注文を満たしてもらう出版方法です。

The service called “on demand publishing” that is becoming popular in places like the USA is a way of publishing where you have the publisher save the data you want to publish (pdf files, etc.) and fill orders by printing out only the number of copies ordered by customers, who place orders through the publisher.

最近紹介した作品の中、フラッシュというソフトで写真や白黒の 描画を ベクターイメージへと変換させることによりさまざまな効果を得たものがありました。今回の作品もベクターイメージへと変換させることにより独特な効果を得たものです。ただし、写真でも白黒の描画でもありませんでした。今回は手で描いた白黒の描画をパソコンに取り込んだ後、色の濃淡を柔らかにぼかしてくれるさまざまな「 ぼかし効果」 を利用しながらその白黒の描画に色を塗って、出来上がったカラーイラストをベクターイメージへと変換させたのです。今回はベクターイメージへと変換させることにより、線、形、色のすべてが変わり、全く新しいタッチが現れました。たとえば、右側の頭は変換前、青から白へのグラデーションで表現されていましたが、変換後は階段状になりました。また、腕を覆う布の表現なども変わりました。

Some of the works that I have put up here recently have been altered in various ways by converting photographs and black and white line drawings to vector images in the software called Flash. And this piece is also a work that was given special effects by a conversion into the vector image format. But it wasn’t a photograph or a black and white line drawing. This piece started out as a black and white line drawing that I scanned into my computer and applied color to using an assortment of blurring effects that basically blur the light and dark tones of color into soft gradations. I then took the finished color illustration and converted that into a vector image. The conversion I did this time wound up altering the lines, shapes, and colors completely, giving the image an entirely new feel. For example, the head on the right side was rendered with a color gradation from blue to white before the conversion, but was given a jagged step like pattern after the conversion. Also, the rendering of the cloth draped across the arms changed as well.

このように、自分が時間を掛けて描いたものが一瞬、あるソフトの機能で全く新しいものへと変わるのは非常に面白い制作方法です。モチーフをデフォルメして、でてくる新しいものをモチーフにするという面で、花を画面に拡大していたことで有名なジョージア・オキーフが利用していた方法を思い出します。

I think this method of taking an illustration that you have spent a lot of time drawing and changing it into something completely new in an instant via software functions is an incredibly interesting way to make art. In terms of deforming a motif and making the result of that a new motif, I kind of feel it shares some kinship with the methods used by Georgia O’Keefe, who was famous for enlarging flower shapes on canvases.

私の作品をジョージア・オキーフの作品と比べようとはしませんが、制作方法としてはオキーフの美学と共通点が感じる部分もあります。

Obviously I don’t want to compare my work with O’Keefe’s, but I do have to say that as a method of creating art, I do sense some common ground with her aesthetics.
